Screw the onlookers and their comments - good for you for giving them real experience in how we can make real change happen. :)

Julia went to her first demonstration when she was nearly 3 months old - the Westboro Baptist people were coming into town to protest the funeral of one of the Flight 3407 victims, and we were among the counter-demonstrators. (I'm sure some would say bringing my infant out in February in Buffalo was not the wisest idea, but she was bundled up in her sling under my coat...and I think you can't start too early in getting your kids involved in social activism... :) )Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-24296089119131154812014-01-26T17:54:16.787-05:002014-01-26T17:54:16.787-05:00Sorry for the delay. I went to a great Catholic school as a kid, but it took up the whole day not to mention a huge amount of homework. It wasn't a childhood and I could have learned in a fraction of the time.

It sounds like your biggest concern is friends. First off, the best thing to do is meet people in your neighborhood who homeschool and do regular playdates, but there are some groups too (link above - if they don't work let me know - I have been a bit lazy with the blog) with regular outings and field trips.

As far as negative relatives, we never get a negative reaction from our own parents, but I am never sure if it is that they think homeschooling is good or if they just are afraid we will freak out if they are critical. I do have a neighbor who was really in my face about it for a while. I feel like the best defense is the good results, although that is sort of tricky sometimes because how does one demonstrate the results. Ultimately, you need to be comfortable about your choices for your kids, their success (to the extent it reflects on anyone except themselves) will reflect on you not your relatives. It may help to gather up stats on homeschooling in defense, but keep in mind that the conventional wisdom is really entrenched in out society so don't be upset if you fail to convince.

I would love to correspond in more detail if you want
homeschoolinginbuffalo@gmail.comLizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14559183077092202848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-78285500957626097142014-01-04T15:44:28.499-05:002014-01-04T15:44:28.499-05:00Hello! We have two boys, 3 and 4, we've been looking into alternative educational paths and we're now considering the unschooling approach. Our 4 year old is currently enrolled in a pre-school early childhood program which we hate (even at such a young age I feel like it's a very negative place, too structured and discipline focused, other children are violent and pick on him for his long hair and even his interests in animals and nature as opposed to characters, the teachers do not connect with us at all, it's just awful) and he seems to be interested in homeschool is worried about losing his friends. Do you belong to any groups or know of any in the area? Or do you rely or programs of your daughters choosings to meet friends? I would like to get him involved with other groups of children fairly quickly because I don't want him to think he's missing anything.
I also wonder how you deal with any possible negative reactions from others. I know it's not something I should be worried about but we rent from my mother-in-law. Were self-employed and in our twenties, not making a ton, and living here is helpful for a lot of different reasons. But she sends her kids to a charter school with uniforms and "color days" then to a popular afterschool program until 7pm and thinks I should do the same. Honestly, she's a little scary. I'm just wondering if you've had to deal with anything like this and how you've gone about it.
Sorry about the length of this, you're the first homeschooling mom I've found in this area with some similar views as ours about education. And I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
- Chelsea

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17861700209599812388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-57696270806273161212013-09-09T02:32:05.378-04:002013-09-09T02:32:05.378-04:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05382331393491354074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-80533046627315780222013-07-03T19:22:04.205-04:002013-07-03T19:22:04.205-04:00Thanks so much for stopping by the blog. There are...I am sorry for the delay in responding. There are many families who bike and walk in the Elmwood village, but I have to admit that you kind of get to know people at the playground, and other places when you are out and about. Some of the people we spend the most time with us found us through my blog or homeschooling e-mail lists and realized they were close by. Other people we just met out and about so to speak. We also have college friends in the area, but their kids don't homeschool so we are on very different schedules.

The rents and real estate seems to have recently gone crazy. It was good news for me rerenting my upstairs, but I have noticed that people trying to buy are having a more difficult time even having to pay over asking price in some cases which used to be unheard of in wny. Hopefully, you are getting advice from good sources in the area.

The lack of good public schools is a problem although that isn't why we homeschool. People slam the public schools a lot here, but honestly there is a broad range, some of the best schools where students test to get in and some of the worst very much like one would expect. There are also a large number of charter schools. Obviously, I am biased towards homeschooling.

If you would like to chat further please e-mail me at homeschoolinginbuffalo@gmail.com
Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14559183077092202848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-87466116581377456492013-06-24T08:42:41.769-04:002013-06-24T08:42:41.769-04:00I am sorry to hear you went through such a difficu...I am sorry to hear you went through such a difficult time with your tenant. When I still resided in Canada, we also owned a home and the above apartment was rented out. I remember going through a similar situation and it was MOST unpleasant. That's behind you now which really should be the focus and as you have said, perhaps a lesson in citizenship and business.

For citizenship in our family, we have focused on issues that are the most concerning to our 8 year hold whom we homeschool and have run various events to raise awareness and funds, from open mic concerts to bake sales! This will continue to be our focus as we move forward.

I hope you will take the time to visit us at http://newyorkadventuresinhomeschooling.com as we are a stone's throw away from you in Niagara Falls!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-75371988490980902432013-06-09T16:06:04.595-04:002013-06-09T16:06:04.595-04:00Hi Liz, I have stopped by your blog a few times th...Hi Liz, I have stopped by your blog a few times this year as we are doing our Buffalo research. My husband is taking a position at Buff State this fall and we are looking into communities and lifestyles as we decide were we might end up. I have been connected through friends to other Buffolites, we made a quick trip up a couple weeks ago to look at neighborhoods and houses, and yet I still haven't found "our niche." A lot of that is for personal reasons, as we don't want to be further than 4miles from BS (preferably not further than 2m), we want an active and engaging, but "quiet and safe" neighborhood preferably with good public schools (although it seems that might not be a reasonable request), and yet, all this needs to be in our price range, which we are finding near impossible thanks to the great tax rates. Anyway, all of this is to say...hi, do you have any insight for us? Where are all the families that do fun things during the day live, where are the families who bicycle everywhere, are we being unreasonable? Are there other Buffalo family bloggers?

You can read more about us at www.asimplesix.com

Thank you!Stacyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234591951552701125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-85762141886513167722013-04-03T11:12:09.612-04:002013-04-03T11:12:09.612-04:00We've been thinking about learning how to make...We've been thinking about learning how to make homemade soap. They chose and researched daily life in England during the Renaissance. (Obviously, they were older than your kids!)

They took a month to amass recipes, crafts supplies and instructions, a song or two, and game ideas. They got our largest, plainest tent and came up with some ways to disguise its hearty REI look and make it look more period-appropriate. They built a sand based fire pit and brick oven in the back yard (with help from their grandpa). They invited two or three friends, and everything was in place for the weekend-long experiment.

The girls were all amazed that they had so little time to play the games, sing the songs, or do the handicrafts. Instead, they were CONSTANTLY chopping wood, boiling water, and cooking. Food prep took a lot longer than they expected. And of course the girls were totally "cheating" since their food was from the grocery store rather than darting through a forest on-the-hoof, or growing in fields and gardens.

It was a wonderful and educational experience, partly because it didn't turn out quite the way they hoped!Cathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14193364064153971972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-27367559787827734062013-03-18T14:03:34.702-04:002013-03-18T14:03:34.702-04:00True! I have hesitated to have my son read on the actual bus rather than just waiting for the bus or for a class to start, but I should probably have him give it a whirl.

I am pretty happy with the Time4Learning too. I use it mainly to make sure we don't miss anything. It sure helps MY time management! We recently moved to a very rural area, and everything is a long drive (30-45 minutes average) and I am trying to encourage my daughter to do some of her reading and book school work in the car while we are travelling. I think she is beginning to see the benefits, but I still expect to have to enforce that time management for a while yet. She is in 7th grade, but still does not have great time management practice yet. Best of luck, and happy homeschooling!Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08784646366110943578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-66281028333250197732013-01-21T21:50:40.233-05:002013-01-21T21:50:40.233-05:00Out of sight, out of mind. (I mean, it's school, right? Of course it's productive! The professionals know what they're doing!) The kids eventually learn to read and add and stuff, so the parents naturally assume that this is exactly how much time and effort it takes (plus homework!) to teach those things.mot par mothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09723056078338719733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-37435054668100701902013-01-10T19:34:42.452-05:002013-01-10T19:34:42.452-05:00I am glad that my kids aren't the only ones wh...I am glad that my kids aren't the only ones who think that tasting salt water is a great idea! :o)Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14559183077092202848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451825013190301094.post-81820270984078257222013-01-09T08:22:51.718-05:002013-01-09T08:22:51.718-05:00Some of the biggest science concepts can be taught...Some of the biggest science concepts can be taught with the simplest materials.
